What I learned by Watching the Democratic Convention

hillary clinton dnc

Okay, I will admit it.. I drank the Kool-Aid that the Democratic Party offered.  After the horrifyingly  bleak Trump Convention, my mouth was so dry that  I gulped the optimistic message this week like a drunken sailor. And by Friday morning, I was so refreshed, enthused about life and ready to take on the world.

What I learned from watching this convention was why I should be on board for Hillary Clinton. It was a stark contrast to what I learned about Donald Trump from the RNC . The first fact is that Hillary Clinton has  worked to help our country for over 25 years, as a lawyer, first lady in Arkansas, first lady to the President, Senator of New York and Secretary of State. During that same time,  Trump has done nothing but help himself. He has built a business by filing Chapter 11 four different times and in his personal life, has been married three  times. This shows me that he has a tendency to give up quickly and take the easiest way out he can find. On the other hand, Hillary worked through the  difficult times in her marriage and when her attempt at working on the healthcare program failed, she pushed on to make it work in another way.

I learned this week that Hillary is a fighter, not because she is some power hungry demon trying to destroy our way of life but because she believes in helping people when they are in need and she wants to make our lives better.  Her motto  is from the Methodist founder, John Wesley “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” I learned that if Hillary had been more public about all the good things she was doing for people, maybe all the demonizing could have been squashed or at least tempered. But I guess her good deeds were not driven by that evil ego that she is supposed to possess.

I learned that Hillary is strong and when it comes to being commander in chief, she has a steady nature that will keep our country safe. She is an avid listener which is a quality for any good leader. By listening, she will learn the heart of a problem and take advice to attempt to fix the problem. Trump feels he “alone” knows how to fix everything and probably with little thought or consideration for anyone around him.

I learned that Hillary is fair enough to acknowledge what Bernie Sanders has done for the Democratic Party. She is smart enough to work with him to include his ideas into the party platform. I only wish some of his “dreamers” had enough vision to understand the process and realize that if they waste their vote by not voting for Hillary, any viable chance of what  they have been fighting for will be lost to the wind, if she doesn’t win.

I learned that Hillary gets along with both sides of the aisle. When she was a Senator she was commended by Republicans for working with them. Maybe that is why so many Republicans are with her this time. She understands the system and how it works in order to work with in it. Now this baffles me the most. I understand that our system needs a lot of work and that we need a change. But Hillary Clinton is the most qualified to lead us to a solution. Change does not mean hiring someone for the job who is woefully unqualified. Would you hire someone who knows nothing about automobiles to fix your car? Would you hire someone who knows nothing about the mechanics of your pipes to fix your plumbing? Or any other problem that you have? Now is not the time to be stupid about your choices.

And most of all, I learned that the people who know Hillary the best, trust her. They have dealt with her one on one  for years. They trust her nature. They know what motivates her and they trust her. They know her first hand. All we really know about her is what we have read.

In order to get through until November without having a stroke by worrying about the failure that is Donald Trump, I have chosen to visualize our First Woman President being elected. I have chosen positivity over hate, misogyny  and bigotry. After all, I belong to an Optimistic Party with a diversity of inclusion.

And as Susan B Anthony instructed us “Failure is Impossible”

So I can very proudly say, “I’m With Her!!!”

What I Learned from Watching Trump’s Convention

Helpful infographic for disputing those who claim that Donald The line of 'Make America great again,' the phrase, that was mine Trump is better thanthe same as Clinton - Imgur

I am so glad that Trump’s Convention is over and we can get back into a more believable and tolerable reality.  His fear tactics did the trick but not for the reasons he had intended.

I tried to be open-minded and watch most of his convention but it was extremely hard to watch so  I had to turn it off and take breaks. Call me a wimp but I am not used to listening to that much hate, at that kind of level, for that length of time. Particularly when that sort of venom is spewed at me, my party and my candidate, Hillary Clinton.  But from what I was able to stomach, I learned this from HIS convention.

Trump came in and bulldozed his way into being the Republican’s candidate. Just like an industrial  business man, he bought a piece of property and bulldozed all the trees that added the charm to the place but were in his way. He built a skyscraper that blocks everyone’s views so that he is center of attention. And he topped it off with his name in Gold letters. Most of the Republicans I know are pretty fair-minded people and most are not Trump supporters but are feeling bullied into accepting him as their candidate because they are left with no other choice. I truly feel sorry for them.

I learned that Trump’s America is one of the worst places to live on our planet. It is so dangerous and horrible that we should probably all carry guns just to protect ourselves all the time. That we should first of all,  jail Hillary Clinton because she caused everything to be this way and that she is as heinous as probably Hitler. She is a liar, cheater and etc. She is, of course, the main obstacle standing in his way of taking over the White House so the more fear he can create about her the better.  What Chris Christie did with his mock trial was so over the top that I would imagine regular Republicans cringed with embarrassment. At least I hope so. And perhaps the bravest moment I witnessed was Ted Cruz’s speech. I never thought I would say those words because I am not fond of Ted Cruz at all. But he did not succumb to Trump’s tyrannical bullying and endorse him. He stood before a huge crowd of his peers and he spoke honestly. A rarity for the people who spoke at Trump’s convention.  It took guts for him to stand up to Trump and be booed off the stage while Trump entered the convention to victoriously observe Cruz being eaten by the lions.  Perhaps that was Trump’s sole purpose of having Cruz there in the first place.

I learned that there were 18 black delegates there in Cleveland. It is no wonder that they feel incensed by the Black Lives Matter movement…  Trump’s Republicans support the novelty of knowing a few so they don’t appear too racist. Simply put, Trump’s people believe that it is Black Lives against Blue Lives.. or All Lives. All Black Lives Matter is saying is that Black lives matter, too… not exclusively so why is that so threatening to anyone? I saw a woman holding up a sign that said No Racism, No Hate being attacked on the floor of the convention and having her sign ripped from her hands and escorted from the hall. And she was white…How was that threatening?

I learned that our very own president Barack Obama along with Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, created ISIS because he is a Muslim and sympathizes with them. Now we need semi automatic weapons to wipe them out quickly .  I am not saying that our times are not weird and dangerous right now but the cause is much deeper than Trump  has an understanding for.  His biggest lie of last evening was to say there would be no lies. And then he started his lies.  He understands the system better than anyone and he ALONE can fix all of America’s problems. He is not going to tell us what his solution might be except to build a wall and lower taxes. We  know that most politicians lie so  please check the chart above (a count of lies checked by PolitiFact) to see who lies the most.

And I learned that Plagiarism is acceptable now.

I have not gotten into Nato, imprisoning women for abortion, changing anything that Obama has improved in our country with like LGBT rights, affordable healthcare or addressing the enviroment.  What I was left with is the thought that OUR America under Trump will be a very scary place indeed.

The Irony of Melania Trump’s Speech

As a feminist, I try very hard not to bash other women.  I don’t do so well when it comes to women like Sarah Palin or Ann Coulter but Melania Trump is a different situation.

I debated whether or not to even watch her speech but it appears that I didn’t have to since I saw some of it in 2008, when Michelle delivered it.  Yes, I will admit that late last night I had a little giggle as the reports rolled in about her plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s speech.

Now the irony of this awkward situation for the Trump campaign is that they are trying loudly and abusively to distance themselves from President Obama and Hillary Clinton. And Yet….. the person closest to Donald Trump comes out and pointedly says that they have the same family values as Barack Obama and his wife. Can it get any better than this?

As much as Trump wants to be divisive, his dear wife inadvertently brings us all together and copies not the speech of another Republican president’s  wife, like Laura, Barbara, or Nancy but she relies on the help of the much ridiculed but brilliant wife, Michelle Obama. She admitted several days before to Matt Lauer that she had written most of the speech herself but she neglected to say that got help from Michelle. She had painted herself into a corner.  Sadly, it wouldn’t have been plagiarism  if she had just stated that “just like Michelle Obama, I……” but she very well couldn’t have done that in front of those gnashing wolves at the convention. If she hadn’t been Trump’s wife, they would have eaten her alive.

So this morning, as a feminist, I have to admire Melania’s efforts. She emulated someone she admired. A woman who is a Democrat. She may not have the best taste in men but in women…. she couldn’t have done any better.

Today, I am thinking about my Dad. I wish I could talk to him today. He died last August and I miss him. He was an honest man and he was a Republican. We debated many times about politics and although we hardly agreed, we respected each other. Not many debates go that way these days. I learned from listening to his opinions and he taught me how to debate. One thing he explained to me is that when your opposition starts name calling, you have won the debate because they have nothing more to add of importance.

I think of that when I listen to all of the Hillary bashing. Conservatives are so consumed with making  Hillary  look as evil as possible that they lead with name calling to destroy her character.  She is a liar, she is cold, she is plain out evil, she is not trustworthy, She is a shrew who cusses as much as she can. She is a money hungry opportunist . She doesn’t follow the rules about emails. How much did she spend on that outfit? Oh, did I say she is a liar. Well, we can add that in several times because I don’t think you can have a conversation about Hillary without pointing that out, straight up.

When will we ever get to the important part of our discussions if we are always being side tracked to address the name calling. Perhaps that is  all the conservatives have.  It is much harder to discuss the issues when your candidate has only offered vaguely what he will do. Most of which are not useful because we don’t live in a dictatorship nor are they legal. So it is much easier to just dismiss Hillary by slandering her. What else can they say?

This election will be the toughest for Republicans because most of them don’t like any of their choices. And they have the worry that if they don’t vote at all, will that be a vote for Hillary? So that makes me wonder what my Dad would say and what he would do. I can only guess but before he died we did talk about Trump. I know my Dad would never have abandoned his morals and voted for Trump. He would never have voted for Hillary either. My Dad would have voted, perhaps not for President but for a Republican Congress to do checks and balances on Hillary.

I wish I could talk to my Dad today.

The spinning of Hillary Clinton……

“Woman’s Work” (monoprint with etching and collage)- d.little-wilson

I think the time has come to start enjoying the history being made, rather than sitting silently and worrying about what might happen. Women’s History is pushing forward in spite of the walls that have been built to block the way. That is truly remarkable.

So let’s get right to it and talk about Hillary Clinton……

As long as I have watched Hillary, she has had to defend herself against a constant barrage of Conservative propaganda. I have marveled at her tenacity. Her dedication to fighting for social justice overrides whatever is thrown at her. Personally, I would have thrown in the towel long ago or just carried the towel to the beach along with a very strong mojito. Is the United States really worth all the negative beatings that she has had to endure? Evidently she believes we are worth it and she has not given up on US even though she could have. Sadly,  that fact just gets spun into the idea that she is only power hungry and overly ambitious.

She started forming these dastardly ideals when she was a teenager and saw Martin Luther King speak. For a male to have such aspirations at an early age, he is rewarded with pride and is encouraged. For a female,  she is usually met with a smile and is stiffled. This is nothing new for women. In biblical times, men debated whether women had souls, so men have had fears about women from the beginning of time. It is no wonder that it has taken so long for a woman to get as far as Hillary in the political world. Luckily, Hillary had the support of her family.

Now, I know many  have bought into the 25 some odd years of propaganda against the Clintons.   At every turn, I hear blanket statements about how Hillary is such a liar and how she is an overzealous and corrupt witch, usually parroted along with “Benghazi” or her blatant disregard of rules about her emails. And yet…. she has not been found guilty of anything. Some how that does not stop the desire to make Hillary into an evil human being set out to destroy the world. Just wishing something true, doesn’t make it so. But that is the nature of propaganda, say it enough and eventually it is taken as a truth. And the problem with the propaganda against the Clintons is that Conservatives have put out so much of it that it is almost impossible to find the truth. But ,of course, it is there if you do the research.

HerLifeOnTheLine

“Her Life on the Line” (Hand colored Etching) -d. little-wilson

I would like to go back to 1992 when Bill Clinton was running for President against George H. W. Bush. Hillary, an accomplished lawyer fighting for the rights of children and the disenfranchised  was asked by Family Circle magazine to pit herself against Barbara Bush on an important woman issue… baking cookies. Unfortunately, Hillary didn’t play along gracefully. She had the wild notion that a first lady didn’t have to surrender her career totally if her husband became the leader of the free world and just bake cookies.  She did submit an Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe but it was too late. The punishing of Hillary had begun.

Her belief that women should be able to tackle major issues has always been a whipping post issue. Instead of redecorating the Blue Room, she took on Healthcare and was met with patronizing criticism. “We voted for Bill but not Hillary” etc. AND then when it hit the fan that Bill cheated on Hillary, there was terrible disappointment that she didn’t divorce or kill him. Instead they vilify HER for standing by her man because she enjoyed her position and loved the lime life, like a Kardashian.

If she tries to keep her cool, she is too reserved and a cold fish. God forbid that she ever cry or she will be labeled as too emotional to handle the hard stuff. If her hair is too short or she wears pants, she is only trying to be a man or is she just  a lesbian? And how much does she spend on her clothes? They think her voice is too shrill while their candidate can openly be misogynistic and a racist and is tolerated. Someone dies, did she have him killed?

Hillary gets spun like the rinse cycle on a washing machine every day. She should be deemed “clean” by now, don’t you think?

The Tolerating of Sarah Palin … Part three…. Feminist

“In Her Own Right”

drawing on monoprint by debbie little-wilson

My original intent was to talk about Sarah Palin as a Maverick…. but “Say it isn’t so” Joe, threw that tag out of the ball park, so to speak….. When he went off on John McCain being no Maverick, it was for me, a real “Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy” moment…. I just LOVE Joe Biden… I have since the 80s, when he first ran for president…

But let’s talk about the other VP candidate … I had it in my head that I wanted to explore all of what Sarah Palin claims to be in order to keep myself “fair and balanced” and maybe even tolerate Sarah, as she does gay people .. You know, like… I tolerate her but I don’t want her to marry her soul mate, oh I mean, I don’t want her to be the VP………. I really don’t want this to just keep bashing Palin so I think I will conclude my assessment of her by talking about her claim to be a Feminist….. To me, this was the most appalling claim of all…

In her interview with Katie Couric, she said this…..

Katie Couric: Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Sarah Palin: I do. I’m a feminist who believes in equal rights and I believe that women certainly today have every opportunity that a man has to succeed and to try to do it all anyway. And I’m very, very thankful that I’ve been brought up in a family where gender hasn’t been an issue. You know, I’ve been expected to do everything growing up that the boys were doing. We were out chopping wood and you’re out hunting and fishing and filling our freezer with good wild Alaskan game to feed our family. So it kinda started with that. With just that expectation that the boys and the girls in my community were expected to do the same and accomplish the same. That’s just been instilled in me.

That is more of a Tom Boy description than a Feminist…. Just like the Maverick tag that they are so trying to cling to in order to separate themselves from George Bush’s Republican party, this Feminist claim just doesn’t stick either….. I would love it if she was a real feminist, I would be able to tolerate her just a little bit more…..

It is not just that she isn’t for women’s choice over what they can do with their bodies, that is bad enough but consider what she is saying with her next comments to Katie Couric….

Couric: What is your definition of a feminist?

Palin: Someone who believes in equal rights. Someone who would not stand for oppression against women.

Couric: Where do you stand on the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act?

Palin: I’m absolutely for equal pay for equal work. The Ledbetter pay act – it was gonna turn into a boon for trial lawyers who, I believe, could have taken advantage of women who were many, many years ago who would allege some kind of discrimination. Thankfully, there are laws on the books, there have been since 1963, that no woman could be discriminated against in the workplace in terms of anything, but especially in terms of pay. So, thankfully we have the laws on the books and they better be enforced.

Couric: The Ledbetter act sort of lengthens the time a woman can sue her company if she’s not getting equal pay for equal work. Why should a fear of lawsuits trump a woman’s ability to do something about the fact that women make 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. And that’s today.

Palin: There should be no fear of a lawsuit prohibiting a woman from making sure that the laws that are on the books today are enforced. I know in a McCain-Palin administration we will not stand for any measure that would result in a woman being paid less than a man for equal work.

Couric: Why shouldn’t the Ledbetter act be in place? You think it would result in lawsuits brought by women years and years ago. Is that your main problem with it?

Palin: It would have turned into a boon for trial lawyers. Again, thankfully with the existing laws we have on the books, they better be enforced. We won’t stand for anything but that. We won’t stand for any discrimination in the workplace – that there isn’t any discrimination in America.

Out of one side of her mouth she says she is for equal rights for women but on the other side, she won’t be voting for them when she gets that kind of opportunity even if it is for equal pay ….. And it clearly sounded like a memorized answer plugged into her head by the McCain staff…. Like most every thing else the woman says…..

I am not sure what her point was to try to even identify herself as a feminist when most of the women in her party take a step back in horror over the word…. Wouldn’t that turn off those women or are they just voting for her because they like her style of glasses…. or her folksy way of talking…. or the way she wears her clothes…… which by the way, it was pointed out to me that she made the fashion gaffe of wearing white after Labor Day yesterday….. Good Grief, can she do no wrong in these people’s minds?…..

I grew up with the Miss America beauty pageant every September and was totally mesmerized by it but even I know the difference between a beauty queen and a feminist……

And Sarah Palin, you are no feminist…..

I would like to stop with that but I want to include one more comment from a much more qualified feminist than myself … This is for any of the Hillary supporters who are still trying to make up their minds between voting for Obama/Biden or doing a protest vote for McCain/Palin … this is from Gloria Steinem….. that would be like saying “Somebody stole my shoes, so I’ll amputate my legs.”

With a Wink and a Prayer… Let’s talk about Sarah Palin

Okay, I have a confession to make and it involves this prized possession of mine…. My good friend, Hal Ottaway found this vintage pin for me and I have worn it almost constantly since I got it…. I loved the connection that I felt with the woman who wore this button before me….. I wondered if she lived long enough to cast her first vote…..I wore this pin to spark conversations about voting…. most people thought I was making a statement about Hillary…. It was really just an excuse to preach to women about voting and the history of how we got the vote…..And when I voted in the Primary, I wore the button (discretely) into the voting booth and touched it as I voted for the first time in my life for a woman for President…. I was overwhelmed by the historic significance of the moment…..

Hillary didn’t win, of course but I was equally excited about Barack Obama….. I admired McCain’s service to our country but when he said he would stay in Iraq for a hundred years, if it took that long to win that war, I was appalled…. and started to worry about what our world would become under the rule of another Warrior (in so called “Maverick’s” clothing)…. Once he made his decision to have Palin for his running mate, my worry went into overdrive… I had no idea who she was but the more I learned the worse my worry became…

I was disheartened and insulted that this woman was McCain’s idea of the kind of woman who would best represent the women in this country…. It showed me that he has no understanding of who women are and what we need… Does he think we are so stupid that any person with a vagina would lure the Hillary supporters away from Barack Obama?…..

This woman does not speak for me….

SO, I took off my button because I didn’t want anyone to assume that I was for Palin because “Votes for Women” meant Vote for ANY Woman…… Quite frankly, I didn’t want to talk about her at all… But if you know me, you know that sooner or later I would have to speak my mind…..

So let’s talk about Sarah Palin…..

First of all, I have to say that I wanted to see her fall on her face during the debate…. I felt guilty because as a feminist, I shouldn’t want to watch any woman fall flat on her face, EVER…… Like most everyone else, I am ready for this race to be over and to me, if Palin failed miserably, McCain’s run for the White House would be seen for what it is (a huge mistake), Obama would be President by a landslide and all would be right with the world……

But Palin did better than I expected which wasn’t a huge feat because my expectations of her were so low … Putting aside the fact that she said nothing substantial, I found her over the top “folksy” attitude and speech frightening…. Doesn’t the public remember that Bush got elected and reelected because of his good old boy folksy ways? So why would we want more of the same ? This country can’t afford more of the same….. It certainly isn’t a maverick who would play that card to the hilt……… Wake up all you hockey moms and Joe SixPacks….. ( I can’t believe she said that)…. I am neither of those but I certainly want someone more intelligent and informed than myself to be President or VP…….

And all that winking….. good God… was that supposed to be charming? Maybe she was winking because she was trying to get that clump hair out of her eye….My Mother may be a Republican but I would imagine she was thinking Palin needs to have a good hair cut….. You Betcha..

I have been called a Pollyanna many times but even I can see that our world has been made far more dangerous than it ever has been, physically and financially, thanks to Bush’s cowboy, maverick style.. McCain and Palin can’t distance themselves from Bush because like other’s have said, Palin is just George Bush in a dress….

I have more to say about Palin but it exhausts me to be this negative at too long of a stretch.. But I will catch my breath and say more tomorrow…..

And so I will close with this prayer……

“Please God, don’t let Americans be hood-‘winked’ again….”
